Our Impact

Small businesses are a major force in the U.S. economy generating nearly 50% of our gross domestic product ($8 trillion dollars). There are more than 30 million small businesses and of that number 88% have fewer than 20 employees. Business ownership allows individuals, including women and minorities, to achieve financial success, as well as pride in their accomplishments. However, the challenges and stresses of running a small business are exponential as it grows. We recently completed our first Bounce Forward program and would like to share some of the experiences and discoveries our inaugural cohort had during the process.

“We started a year before the pandemic hit. A lot of the contracts we had dissolved because people were just trying to figure things out. But I understood this business was a calling, it was something bigger than myself.

What I learned during the Bounce Forward experience is that if you really shore up your resources, and that includes your human resources, then you don’t have to shoulder all of that work on your own.

I really can take a day off. I can take a trip. I can get my balance back as a leader, without having to check in, without having to be consumed with whether or not things are being attended to, because it has been proven that when I put that trust in my employees, they show up.”

“One of the a-ha moments I had while doing the Bounce Forward program is how dependent my team was on me when it came to decision-making.

So I started training and working with them on making decisions for themselves. Because if they’re going to grow and eventually step into other positions, they need to know how to do that from their point of view and values.

When you’ve taken the time to train and mentor your employees to be your strategic partners, you have less on your plate. You have better energy. It freed me up to where I had time to work on a second hotel that we are building. It’s like a cycle of joy because everybody feels happier about what they’re doing and everybody is taking part to make the business successful.”

“A typical day in my company before the Bounce Forward program was pretty much chaos. I didn’t know how to help my employees with their everyday stresses and my management style was very dictator-ish.

After one of the workshops, I called all of my employees, including one former employee, to ask them about their experience and how I could do better. Now I’m more attentive to the needs of my employees on a day-to-day basis.

Truck drivers, when they’re mad at you, will take a longer route because it eats up more gas and you have to pay for it. Participating in this program literally saved me almost $1,200 a week just on gas and we’re growing so much faster than I ever imagined.

One of the unexpected things about the Bounce Forward program was the positive effect it’s had in my personal and family life. I was able to see how much time I was spending in my business and how it was taking me away from other things that are really important to me.

I was able to make some changes that have meant our employees are more empowered, their energy is different. They’ve become more creative. They have a confidence in themselves that just helps everyone and really is helping us shift to a place where we can have a greater impact on more people.

As a result, I actually have time to do strategic thinking. I have time to work on the business and not entirely in the business.”
